Avatar 2 Screening Chaotic & Considered a Fail in Japan
The screening of the film Avatar 2: The Way of Water in Japan ended in chaos. Even though the distributor of the film was very ambitious by releasing it in almost all theaters in the State of Sakura.
Avatar: The Way of Water failed to top the list of grossing films in Japan in its first week of release, losing to the anime film, The First Slam Dunk.
Reporting from Bloomberg, not a few cinemas in Japan reported technical problems. In fact, one of the cinemas in Japan had to lower Avatar's frame rate to 24 fps from 48 fps.
Avatar: The Way of the Water is actually available in several formats, including 2D 48 fps, 3D 48 fps, and standard 24 fps. The 48 fps version only uses High Frame Rate (HFR) technology for action scenes, then plays in 24 fps format for dialogue-filled scenes.
Apart from this film directed by James Cameron, another film that uses HFR is The Hobbit trilogy directed by Peter Jackson, which was released in 2012. According to Engadget, HFR is most suitable for 3D formats to avoid potential eye pain and nausea.
On the other hand, 24 fps technology is more comfortable for 2D formats because it gives a more natural impression and doesn't have too contrasting colors or a soap opera effect. It is similar to watching a video game.
